NOSCE TE IPSUM

SCD Studio in Perugia IT presents NOSCE TE IPSUM, a solo exhibition by Rosita D’Agrosa, curated by Barbara Pavan. This exhibition project brings together several series of works by the artist, reflecting an inner journey aimed at self-knowledge and the recognition of one’s individuality.

An only child raised in a cultural environment shaped by both Southern Italy and Latin America, D’Agrosa experienced emancipation as a complex and arduous process. This was strongly influenced by deeply patriarchal family dynamics inherited from both her maternal and paternal cultures. From this context arises the assertive need to affirm and narrate her femininity through her artwork, liberating it from societal and traditional ‘cages’ that might hinder or limit its authenticity. Thus, in a play of echoes and references, the exploration of her personal and intimate dimension becomes a universal reflection on the female condition. This, in turn, finds a collective and transgenerational redemption wherever the individual gains the possibility to exist and express themselves. Her inner journey is complex and marked by a continuous reworking of lived experience—not as a denial of the past but as a search for balance between opposites.

The works on display reveal a constant tension between contrasting materials and a narrative that intertwines cyclical and linear time, between the preservation of memory and the overcoming of its limits. The use of embroidery evokes childhood memories of feminine freedom—an experience shared among women as they dedicated time to this craft, away from male control and scrutiny. What was once a simple manual activity thus transformed into a space of expression and self-determination. Today, this technique becomes a tool of affirmation and rebellion: embroidering symbols of emancipation, such as a vulva or a uterus, not only reinforces the assertive value of the artwork but also definitively severs the link with a form of freedom granted and regulated by external forces. Through her art, D’Agrosa restores voice and dignity to a female universe, fully affirming its autonomy and uniqueness.

The exhibition will be open at SCD Studio, Via Bramante 22N, Perugia, from April 12 to May 10, 2025. Opening on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 6:00 PM. Exhibition catalog by Al3Vie Ed. available.

THE ARTIST

Rosita D’Agrosa graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where she further honed her artistic training through a scholarship at the Il Bisonte Foundation, specializing in printmaking and art graphics. During her academic journey, she participated in several artist residencies in Spain, particularly in Lleida, Erill la Vall, and Arenys de Munt. Her artistic research is characterized by experimentation and the cross-pollination of pictorial, graphic, and textile media. She reclaims techniques rooted in her family history, transforming them into an expressive language. Her poetics explore an intimate and personal female dimension, the result of a meticulous study of the body and an analysis of the transformations to which human beings are subject.

D’Agrosa has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Recent shows include: Paesaggi interiori at the Museum of Landscape in Riolo Terme, Ravenna, and Jaulas para pensamientos at ELtouch Art Gallery in Pietrasanta (2025). In 2024, she exhibited in Spain with Mujeres en tela: narrativas de lo íntimo, hosted at Mieres Centru Cultural in Asturias. In 2023, her works were featured at the Italo Bolano Foundation in Prato, Latte Project Space in Faenza, and Lucía Dueñas Gallery in Oviedo. Among the group exhibitions and contemporary art fairs, she was selected for Crea Open in Venice and Tessitrici di destini – Le voci delle donne at Pubblica_Lab in Sant’Omero, Teramo (2025). The previous year, she participated in Partage, organized by the Amleto Bertoni Foundation in Saluzzo, and in 2023, in Unclassifiable in Todi, Erotika2 and Erotika3 between Milan and Turin, and Femminile plurale at Dr Fake Cabinet in Turin.
