WORK SPACE BRUSSELS STUDIO RESIDENCY

WORK SPACE BRUSSELS supports research, experimentation and creation in the performing arts.

Are you looking for studio space to develop your project? If so, you can apply for a residency on https://www.workspacebrussels.be/en/studio-residency

For whom?

The residency programme is aimed at Belgian and international artists working within the performing arts in the broad sense of the word (dance, performance, theatre, crossovers with other disciplines). As mentioned, we support both research, experimentation and creation.

What can workspacebrussels offer?

  • Studio space: once your project is selected, they search together for a suitable space in the requested period(s). Thanks to their partners, they have several weeks of studio space at different locations in the city every year. The calendar is different every month, so schedules are made according to availability. Check out the studios here: https://www.workspacebrussels.be/en/studios
  • Period: they offer residencies all year round, except between mid-July and mid-August (summer break) and during the Christmas holidays (winter break). A residency lasts between 1 and 3 weeks. Sometimes several residencies are possible per project.
  • Technical equipment: the studios are not technically equipped or supported. Where possible, we do provide basic technical equipment, such as a sound system, microphone or projector.
  • Overnight accommodation: they only offer overnight accommodation to foreign artists or team members. Possibilities depend on availability in their guesthouse, where they have two bedrooms with two single beds each. A baby cot is available.
  • Budget: they provide a flat fee of €750 (VAT included) per selected project for travel expenses and lunch.
  • Sharing opportunity: if you wish, you can share your research, practice or work with the team and/or fellow residents at the end of your residency. This can also take the form of a (semi)public try-out.
  • Lunch: on Tuesdays, all residents working in the studios at that time are invited for a communal lunch.
  • Library: their library is open to all residents and is expanded based on their suggestions.

How to apply

To apply for a residency, they expect you to answer some questions about yourself and your artistic plan for the residency. All the questions can be found in the online application form in https://www.workspacebrussels.be/en/studio-residency. You can submit your application either in writing or via an audio or video recording. They will gladly read or listen to you in Dutch, French or English.

Reading rounds

You can submit a project proposal at any time of the year. Twice a year, they read the submitted proposals together with an external jury. They select a maximum of 10 projects per round. This is next deadline for the upcoming rounds: apply by 1 November 2025 for a residency between August and December 2026 (selection announcement: mid-January 2026)

It makes no sense to submit a round ‘too early’ as we will not have received their partners’ planning at that time.

Selection

The selection of artistic proposals is done by the workspacebrussels team and (an) artist(s) who join(s) us as external jury. In the selection, they pay attention to the innovative or experimental character of the project, the diversity within the programme, and the feasibility of the proposal within the Brussels context.

All applicants will receive a reply by e-mail two to three months after each deadline. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications, it is not possible to provide personal feedback if your project was not selected.

Do you still have questions?
