GARGOFANIE

Project Room by
Margherita Levo Rosenberg

Curated by Barbara Pavan
Opening: Saturday, 17 May 2025, at 6:00 PM

SCD Studio, Via Bramante 22N – Perugia

SCD Studio presents GARGOFANIE, a project room by Margherita Levo Rosenberg curated by Barbara Pavan, the third event of CASSANDRE, a multidisciplinary platform created to explore the many voices and perspectives of the contemporary female universe through exhibitions, site-specific installations, performances, and talks, running from March to November. Inspired by the mythological figure of Cassandra — symbol of unheard truths and marginalised voices — the project reflects on the role of women today, promoting artistic inquiry free from symbolic or commemorative constraints. It is an invitation to reimagine the margins as spaces of possibility, inversion, and rebirth.

Within this context emerges GARGOFANIE, a poetic and material investigation of thresholds and the boundaries between opposites — full and empty, inner and outer, tangible and imaginary. The title references medieval gargoyles: liminal creatures originally created to expel water from buildings, later becoming mythological figures suspended between function and mystery. Like gargoyles, Levo Rosenberg’s works arise from a tension between destruction and regeneration, created from deconstructed X-ray plates, reworked into filaments that become texture, image, and language.

For Levo Rosenberg, the artistic process is a continuous dialogue between thought and matter, between care and creation. Her works — dense and mutable — resist univocal interpretation and stand as autonomous presences, capable of adapting to the gaze of those who encounter them. Like poetic fragments or crystallised thoughts, they evoke the idea of a wholeness rediscovered only after fragmentation, in which art becomes a tool to express the unspeakable. The gargofanie are acts of resistance and metamorphosis — an invitation to linger at the threshold, where being becomes vision and fragility takes form.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, 17 May 2025 at 6:00 PM, and will be on view at SCD Studio in Perugia, Via Bramante 22N — in the heart of the MAD Monteluce Art Districtuntil 14 June 2025.

Biographical Note – Margherita Levo Rosenberg

Margherita Levo Rosenberg (Ponti, 1958) is an artist whose research has consistently and originally spanned over three decades of visual and theoretical experimentation. Active since the 1990s, she has developed a poetics that views the artistic act as an expression of a continuous cognitive process, capable of transcending the limits of formal language to reach a profound exploration of the relationship between thought, word, and image. Alongside her artistic activity, she has conducted research in the field of psychology, delving into the connections between creativity, psychotherapy, and visual language.

Founder of the Pandeia group, which brought together artists around the idea of absolute expressive freedom, Levo Rosenberg was for nearly two decades (1995–2014) the artistic director of the Museattivo Claudio Costa in Genoa, where she curated the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions of the Artismo project. A tutor in Art Therapy courses at the Brera Academy, she has contributed to the training of new generations of artists and therapists.

Her practice spans multiple languages—from painting to installation, from performance to poetic writing—and is characterised by the use of heterogeneous materials, often reclaimed (plastics, X-rays, books, natural elements), transformed into works that interweave irony, ambiguity, and disillusionment. Her research moves between two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, between figuration and abstraction, between word and gesture, shaping a complex and layered expressive universe.

Her work has attracted attention from critics, art historians, and semioticians, and has been exhibited in museums, galleries, and institutions in Italy and abroad. Among her most recent solo exhibitions are Grano Salis (Magazzini del Sale, Cervia), Tornare a gustare del vino la vite (Spazio Immagina di Generali, Genoa), and the duo show Contemporanee. Arte come radice di un’amicizia (Palazzo Robellini, Acqui Terme). She has been selected for major group shows such as Arteam Cup, International Biennial of Contemporary Fiber Art in Valtopina, Fuorisalone Milan, and numerous international exhibitions in Japan, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

Her works are part of public and private collections in Italy and abroad, testifying to a rigorous artistic path constantly engaging with the complexities of the present.
