AGATA CIECHOMSKA: COLOR IN MOTION AS AN ARCHITECTURE OF PERCEPTION
| by Maria Rosaria Roseo |
Agata Ciechomska, born in Łódź, Poland, is one of the most original voices in the contemporary scene focused on material experimentation and chromatic research. From an early age, she cultivated a profound relationship with materials and the culture of craftsmanship—a connection with everyday objects that led her to study Material Design at the Łódź University of Technology, where she earned her BA. Although her program was primarily oriented toward industrial design, certain artistic courses sparked her interest in the creative potential of materials. The university also offered opportunities for international experiences, and she subsequently completed a Master of Arts (MA) at the Swedish School of Textiles, where she began to define her artistic language. While the early stages of her training presented significant challenges, each experience proved fundamental in shaping her practice and refining her artistic voice. Guided by pivotal mentors, she discovered what is essential to her research and identified effective ways to express it, approaching every new challenge and opportunity for learning with determination.

Her surfaces, created using the manual hand-tufting technique, explore a peculiar optical phenomenon: small segments of color placed side by side, when observed from different distances or angles, blend in the viewer’s eye to create new shades that are invisible in the material but real in perception. Color and light constitute the core of her research, while the support can either enhance or minimize the visual effect. For Ciechomska, observing chromatic phenomena is like experiencing magic: even though she is familiar with color theory, she remains surprised by how easily eyes and brain can be deceived, perceiving colors that do not physically exist or intensifying tones through the interaction of the threads.
