TEXTILE AND SOUND, BEYOND NOTATION. VIBRATING MATERIALS, LISTENING SURFACES

Not everything that sounds asks to be written, and not everything that is written truly holds a sound. The distance between vibration and sign, long shaped by musical notation, begins here to loosen without needing to be denied. It is enough to shift attention, away from what represents, toward what responds.
Textile belongs to this second condition. It is not a neutral support, not a surface awaiting inscription, but already a system of forces in unstable balance, a weave of tensions that react. Every stretched fibre contains the possibility of oscillation, not as an image of the sounding string, but as its material variant, less evident yet continuous. The difference is not in nature, but in how vibration spreads, attenuates, multiplies along lines that are never isolated.
In a fabric, no thread vibrates alone. The weave produces couplings, deviations, subtle interferences that prevent linear propagation. As sound passes through, it loses definition and gains extension, dispersing with precision, reconfiguring itself. The textile does not preserve an event, it reworks it.
In the writings of Anni Albers, trained at the Bauhaus and a central figure in twentieth-century textile research, this intuition is already present. In On Weaving and On Designing, textile is conceived as a structural system, a field of relations between materials, densities, resistances. Every choice produces a response, every variation introduces a perceptual quality. The fabric is never neutral, it is always active.
Touch, in her work, is not secondary but a form of knowledge. Contact with material precedes formalization, understanding arises through the reciprocity between hand and fibre. From here, the perspective can shift, touch and listening share a common condition, both depend on a stimulus, on a vibration that passes through a body and alters it. The distinction between senses comes later.
